Academia Gothic Wedding at The Vancouver Club
If you’ve ever dreamed of a wedding that feels like a love story pulled from the pages of a classic Radcliffe novel—candlelight, velvet tones, sculptural florals, and timeless music echoing through a heritage venue—Nora Liu and William Michell’s Academia Gothic wedding at The Vancouver Club is your inspiration moment. As planned with DreamGroup Founding Planner, Genève McNally — ensuring that their wedding felt cinematic, effortless, and deeply “them.”
On a perfect Autumn Saturday in October, Nora and Will hosted an intimate and elevated celebration for 80 guests in the heart of downtown Vancouver at The Vancouver Club. With a uniquely presented ceremony in the Club’s Grill and an unforgettable dinner in the Ballroom, every hour of the day flowed with intention, warmth, and that perfectly moody-meets-romantic aesthetic that defines a Gothic Academia wedding style. With photos artistically captured by Tomasz Wagner.
Theme: Academia Gothic Period exuding moody romance, heritage elegance, classical music, elegant draperies and candlelight.

The Vision: Romantic, Historic, and Intentionally Dramatic
The “Academia Gothic Period” theme came to life through deep burgundy runners, taper candles, silver accents, architectural décor elements, and a layered respect for the old-world. Think: a sophisticated Gothic mood—dramatically elegant.
Key design moments included:
- Cathedral window ceremony backdrop (custom designed by Unico Print + Media) for a striking architectural statement
- Stone pillars (Reel Silks) and silver candelabras (Debut Event Design) to build height and romance
- Velvet “Rembrandt” floral linens adding rich texture and depth (Element Event Solutions)
- Luxury Custom invitations and on-day stationery by Violet Grey Creative
- Lush florals by Vancouver’s legendary The Flower Factory with sculptural styling support from Bespoke Décor
If you’re searching for Gothic wedding décor ideas in Vancouver or wondering how to create a moody, editorial look without losing warmth—this is the blueprint.

Wedding Morning at The Vancouver Club: G.L.A.M.O.R.O.U.S.
The day began at 9:30am when lead planner Genève arrived at The Vancouver Club with those important “finishing touches” that make a design feel complete: taper candles, burgundy runners, a photo guestbook, and silver trays to elevate cocktail hour styling.
Meanwhile, LUVO Boutique set up in the Georgian Room, and the morning began with the best kind of energy—soft music, happy nerves, and a bridal party that was equal parts elegant and genuinely excited.
Getting Ready Crew
Nora got ready with her bridesmaids: Stephanie, Elissa, Rosalie (Will’s sisters), Olina, and Lily, and Susan Randle (Mother of the Groom).
Sandwiches and sushi were a fun addition—because a well-fed wedding party is a calm wedding party.

First Look + Photos: A Cinematic Love Story in Downtown Vancouver
Photography with documentary and editorial creative Tomasz Wagner began with Nora stepping into her dress while Will arrived to settle into the Reading Room to await the First Look.
Shortly thereafter Nora and Will shared their First Look—one of the most meaningful beats of the entire day. The kind of moment that instantly slows time and reminds you what weddings are really about.
The wedding party joined the festivities and headed around the venue for portraits, leaning into the Vancouver Club’s timeless architecture and old-world ambiance.

“Nora, a quiet and deeply creative graphic artist with an introspective spirit, and Will, a banker with a steady presence and an endearing sense of humour–are the kind of couple who simply fit. I loved collaborating with them as we shaped their early vision, drew out the ideas that mattered most, and turned those plans into a wedding day that felt unmistakably theirs. They were an absolute joy to support from start to finish.” ~ Genève

Dearest Genève,
Words cannot express our deepest gratitude for the beautiful day you have dedicated to delivering to us. Without your professionalism, expertise and undying patience, our magnificent wedding day would not have existed. Thank you so dearly for minding every little detail, every fantastic idea, every thoughtful check in, and your sharp mind-reading abilities, all to realising our vision.
Having you on board was most definitely the best decision we could have made. We understand and can see how you and your team have expertly curated so many elegant, exquisite weddings. We have gotten so many compliments from friends and family that this was the best wedding they have ever been to or seen. Every credit goes to you, so thank you again. We are so very grateful for everything.

Will & Nora

Ceremony in The Grill: Classical Music, Heritage Elegance, and Intentional Seating
As guests arrived and were welcomed into The Grill—harp and violin via V&G Entertainment—set the tone for an elevated, historic-feeling ceremony.
Ceremony Notes & Personal Touches:
- Officiant: Karen Ell
- Rings held by Timothy Buckland
- Bouquet held during the ceremony by Mother of the Bride Elaine Cheng
- Bride escorted by Father of the Bride Bo Liu
- Ceremony music (Processional): Albéniz’s Granada
- Recessional: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: Autumn (1st movement)
Seating was thoughtfully arranged for family comfort and tradition, including reserved front-row seating and special placement for VIP family members.
An elegant and intimate ceremony began at 6:00pm with the celebration shifting seamlessly into cocktails in the Lobby.
Cocktail Hour in the Lobby: Champagne Tower + Romantic Classical Piano
Cocktail hour highlights:
- Cocktails + canapés + passed champagne
- A champagne tower with Nora & Will kicking off the celebration with a classic cork popping ceremony!
- Live pianist entertainment, including Nora & Will’s personal favourite Albéniz’s Cuba
During this time, DreamGroup quietly executed some key design transitions:
-
The cathedral window and two stone pillars with florals were moved to the Ballroom alcove to create a dramatic focal point behind the couple for dinner (a true Gothic Academia statement piece).

Dinner in the Ballroom: A Candlelit Gothic Academia Dream
After the Cocktail Hour guests headed upstairs to find their seats with DreamGroup assistants guiding the flow using an alphabetical seating plan at the Ballroom doors (smooth seating = happy guests).
Father of the Groom and the evening’s Emcee Ian Michell welcomed everyone, the bar opened (strategically timed so it didn’t distract from the welcome), and Nora and Will were introduced into the Ballroom with a special entrance song queued as performed by Ian and the Groom’s sister on Ukele.
Dinner Menu:
- First Course: Truffled Celeriac Soup
- Second Course: Kale & Ancient Grain Salad
- Entrée: Choice of Beef Tenderloin, Sablefish, or Grilled Lion’s Mane Mushroom
- Dessert: Pavlova (an Australian specialty in honour of Will’s heritage and a family favourite)
After a lovely and leisurely dinner, feathered with emotional and thoughtfully shared speeches, guests were invited downstairs for a relaxed and interactive After-Party—because this wedding wasn’t just elegant… it was FUN + PLAYFUL!

Will’s Dad and his Sister Rosie sang Harvest Moon as a surprise for Nora & Will’s Ballroom Introduction

The After Party in The Grill: Live Band, Photobooth, and a Cake-Cutting Moment
After dinner guests headed back down to The Grill which had transformed into the ultimate loungey after-party space:
- Lucky Booth went live with their adorable and nostalgic enclosed photobooth
- A multi-tiered buttecream Gothic Rennaisance inspired Cake by Cakes by Peddie was impressive and so incredibly delicious
- The Grill bar was open for business featuring fabulous custom cocktails
- Vancouver-based acoustic gypsy jazz group Van Django performs
To get the After Party started Nora and Will cut their cake front-and-centre (exactly where it should be), set to “Midnight in Paris” by Van Django—romantic, cinematic, and perfectly Nora & Will.
Then the late-night spread rolled out featuring Charcuterie + Sushi + Cake for guests to enjoy at leisure.
Wedding Cake Highlight: Lemon curd on the side for guests to add to their cake (a chef’s kiss detail)
The bouquet toss wrapped up the night with Van Django once again performing with “Barber of Seville”—a meaningful musical nod Nora and Will personally connected with.

Planning Takeaways: How to assemble the Academia Gothic Wedding Aesthetic
If you’re planning your own version of this style of wedding, here’s what made Nora & Will’s day feel so cohesive:
- Choose a heritage venue with architectural character (it does half the work)
- Build height with pillars, cathedral windows, candelabras
- Add texture: velvet linens, layered runners, candle clusters
- Keep lighting warm and romantic (tapers are everything)
- Use classical music to reinforce the “period” feel
- Create a strong “feature moment” (like the alcove installation) that guests will remember
The Custom Cathedral Window… Nora and Will loved the idea of an old world church ceremony, but having decided on a non-religious ceremony they loved the idea of bringing “The Cathedral” to The Vancouver Club. We called on Gordon and team of Unico Print + Media Productions to help make the dream a reality!
Where it started…an evolution of an idea:

Turning the Grill into a romantic space with a Cathedral feel!
