cake /kāk/ ~ The Sweetest Part
The cake is one of the most anticipated parts of the wedding after the bride’s dress! Will it be elegant and chic or colourful and unexpected? The options these days have moved far beyond the classic 3-tier buttercream cake with ribbon — although the simplified style is making a bit of a comeback with slight revisions to the classic version. We are seeing buttercream finishes with more of a textured “stucco” look in monochrome and neutral shades. Whether you are looking for something classic and pretty or dramatic and a true conversation piece (of cake) there’s no denying that cake is… The Sweetest Part.
Join us on a journey through some of DreamGroup’s most memorable cakes (and donuts and mini pies – YUM!).

How to Cut Your Cake with Confidence
Well, first of all – and this is quite obvious – cutting a cake should never be stressful, however many couples want to look graceful when doing it, so here’s how to cut your cake with confidence. Most people wouldn’t think that instructions are needed for cutting the wedding cake, until it’s time to get up there in front of a room of excited onlookers with iPhones in hand! That’s when some couples may feel anxious and not know what to do.
.
- When it’s time to cut the cake the couple should head up to the cake table.
- Stand together on one side of the cake table considering your audience’s view without your back to them. Your photographer will work around you so don’t stress about them!
- The Bride picks up the knife and places it in a cutting position over the cake and the Groom gently places his hand over hers.
- The Groom then guides her hand down as she makes two cuts into the BOTTOM tier of the cake (not the top as some people think is custom).
- Then together they can carefully remove the slice of cake onto the awaiting plate.
- If you plan to feed each other, the Groom is traditionally the first to feed his Bride, then she feeds him. If you prefer not to feed each other at all then that’s totally fine too!
- Once the cake is cut and tasted, the couple pose for photos for the crowd and photographer.

dg Tips:
- When you’re placing the cake table during setup think about the backdrop it’s in front of. You want something that will look great in those cake cutting photos, NOT an Emergency exit sign, a podium, or a tall floral arrangement sticking out above your heads!
- Confirm with your caterer or venue ahead of time that you will require two cake plates, two forks, two napkins, and a cake knife (and possibly a server) set up on or near the cake table. Also good to remind them about having two champagne flutes at the table if you plan to toast at that time! Makes for a cute photo opp! And don’t forget to fill them with something yummy!
- Lastly, if you have opted for a faux presentation cake, but are still doing a cake cutting ceremony, be sure to specify with the cake maker that you would like a real slice to be included in the design. Sometimes couples will assume that there is always a real slice included and end up hacking into Styrofoam in front of a room full of onlookers — both embarrassing and quite funny all at the same time. If this happens just roll with it and feed each other a piece of Styrofoam!
